Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is an art museum in Victoria, BC, Canada, and occupies a 2.5-acre block that includes two buildings: the Spencer Mansion and the Exhibition Galleries. The building was constructed in 1889 while the galleries were erected from the mid-20th century AD. Established in 1946 by the Little Centre, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria began as a regional museum in downtown Victoria. In 1951, it was gifted the Spencer Mansion and opened at its new location that same year. The museum underwent expansions from 1955 to 1978 to meet more space for collections storage. The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has the largest collection in British Columbia, with nearly 20,000 pieces in their permanent collection. The museum also hosts and organizes traveling exhibitions showcasing many different artists from Canada as well as the Pacific Rim.

Between 1955 and 1978 the Museum of Fine Arts expanded by building seven galleries in a modernist wing adjacent to the eastern portion of the mansion as part of its Exhibition Galleries. The first two fireproof galleries were opened in 1958 and 1959 to commemorate the Centennial of British Columbia. The final rehabilitation during this period was in 1978, which saw the renovation of two of its larger exhibits. It also saw repairs to the Spencer Mansion.

As of September 2019, the museum has over 20,000 pieces in its permanent collection, giving it the largest art-focused collection of any institution in British Columbia. However, only five percent of the permanent collection is able to be exhibited in the museum’s exhibition galleries because of limited space. The Museum’s collection is comprised of a number of departments including Asian art, Canadian art, contemporary art, decorative arts, and Indigenous Canadian Art.
